When John Rumbaugh was born on November 1, 1811, in Virginia, his father, George, was 22 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 22. He married Mary Elizabeth Higgenbotham in 1833 in Greene, Ohio. They had 12 children in 31 years. He died on February 7, 1876, in Eldora, Iowa, at the age of 64, and was buried there.
