“Miss Maria Myrick was born on the coast of Maine, September 20,1814, and was of Scots and Welsh descent. Her ancestors were ship builders by trade but after coming west became agriculturists.” The couple engaged in farming [see notes for Thomas] and moved to Iowa where, …”After his death his widow made her home with their son Harvey until she, too, passed away in 1894, at the age of 80 years. Both were earnest and consistent members of the Methodist Episcopal church and were highly esteemed by all who knew them.”
“Reed, Mrs., 80 year old widow of late Thomas Reed, died at her son Harvey’s south of Indianola, and was buried in the Palmyra Cemetery. Rev. Flesher preached the sermon.” Her burial took place at the Palmyra Cemetery. The double marker inscription for Maria Reed, at Row 23, which is shared with Thomas reads: “Died Sep 2, 1894, age 79 yrs, 11 mos, 6 days.”
The 4 1/2 foot tall highly polished red granite marker, on a grey granite base, 40 x 40 inches square, is inscribed: “Maria Reed Died Sep. 1, 1894 Aged 79 Y’s 11 M’s 6 D’s”
